Date: February 8, 2018

Location:
Elmont
NY, USA

About:

Stewart Manor School fifth-grade students, members of the Student Council and local veterans gathered for a special pre-Valentine’s Day event in the school’s library on Jan. 27.

The meeting began with students presenting American Legion Elmont Post 1033 veterans with handcrafted Valentine’s Day cards for all of their members. The veterans were then invited to share stories about their military service. After enjoying a light snack, the veterans joined the students as they created Valentine’s Day cards for veterans in local hospitals and nursing homes. As the students created their cards, the American Legion members provided suggestions on the sentiments the students should include.

Assistant Principal Cynthia Cameron organized this community service event to bring meaning to the yearly tradition of making Valentines for Veterans.

“It was truly a touching and heart-warming experience,” Ms. Cameron said. “It is something we will continue to do in years to come.”

Members of the American Legion expressed their gratitude to the children for the “outpouring of love” they showed to the group.
